HANNA Vertical Tasting Series

Vertical Wine Tasting

A vertical wine tasting highlights the unique expression of a particular varietal from vintage to vintage. This rare tasting experience allows the wine connoisseur to taste and compare multiple vintages of the same varietal, made by the same winemaker, with wines cellared under perfect conditions.

Several factors can affect vintage variation: weather during the growing season, water availability, viticultural practices, and of course, evolving winemaking techniques.

Join us to learn more about vintage variation and taste through our library selections to find your favorites.

Experience this unique tasting opportunity by visiting HANNA during one of our scheduled Vertical Tasting Experiences listed below. Each weekend, we will pull select vintages of various library wines.

When booking, use the promotion code: Vertical to receive $10 off your tasting experience.

Reservations are required.

Winemaker's Statement on Growing Seasons 2013-2019:

2013 Vintage: The 2013 growing season was a much drier version of 2012, with slightly warmer temperatures as well. Despite the early bud break, frost was not an issue in the spring. The peak summer months were moderate, resulting in steady ripening, good acid retention and intense flavor development.

2014 Vintage: The 2014 growing season was very dry and early. Despite the early bud break and bloom there were few spring frost events. The peak summer months were warm and moderate, so disease pressure was low, ripening was even and color and flavor development phenomenal.

2015 Vintage: The 2015 growing season was once again dry and odd. Late winter and early spring were hot. Late spring was cool and fruit set was poor. The peak summer months were moderate, resulting in steady ripening and good acid retention. Late summer heat pushed sugar accumulation because of the small crop.

2016 Vintage: Following adequate winter rains, the 2016 growing season began early again as the trend toward warmer winters continues. There was almost no frost pressure and the season progressed without significant weather worries. A single heat spike in July was short lived. This was followed by a glorious, easy ripening August and September that allowed the grapes to hang until late September into mid-October

2017 Vintage: A welcome, very wet winter filled reservoirs. Spring frost was absent. A relatively dry, cool spring led into a summer with alternating cool and very hot periods. Blocks that were blooming during extremes suffered some shatter but overall the crop size was average. A cool, drippy August was followed by a Labor Day heat wave that pushed harvest into high gear. Temperatures then moderated into a glorious, easy ripening September and early October.

2018 Vintage: Adequate rainfall, no frost pressure and mild spring temperatures was a great start to the vintage. This continued with a temperate summer and early fall. October 1st rain provided some drama, but it dried quickly enough to be a blessing for everything but Chardonnay. Warm sunny days followed the rain, continuing the long even ripening of the Bordeaux varieties.

2019 Vintage: Winter was mild and very wet, (50 plus inches of rain) delaying bud break and setting the stage for a low irrigation year on the mountain. Degree-days tracked a bit higher than 2018, with ideal weather and no temperature spikes until we had two hot days in mid-August and late September-which alleviated any worries about our bit of mid-September rain. 2019 was an extremely long harvest with moderate weather continuing into early November.
