2022 Hanna Malbec 750ml
Vineyard: HANNA’s 2022 Alexander Valley Malbec was grown on our ranch in Alexander Valley. Below Hoot Owl Creek this bench land is planted on Clough Series gravelly loam soil. Above Hoot Owl it’s planted on Laughlin Series Sandy Loam. These low vigor soils are only two feet deep. The vineyard is planted to 45 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 acres of Malbec and just over half-acre of Saint Macaire. The malbec is planted using in-row variable spacing.
Alexander Valley 2022: October 2021 brought an atmospheric river event that recharged the soil profile. The next growing season, this led to an even bug break, strong early growth, and a moderate crop. A Goldilocks summer, until Labor Day that is, resulted in even ripening and an early start to harvest. The slop steepened dramatically over Labor Day, with days of high heat pushing sugar accumulation. The grapes for this blend were picked from September 16, 2022, at an average of 25.4°.
Winemaking: We hand-harvested in the cool hours from midnight to sunrise. The grapes were hand-sorted, destemmed and partially crushed to stainless steel fermentation tanks. Pressing was done to taste, based on daily tastings of the wines after pumpover, with an average of ten days skin contact. The newly pressed wines were racked to tank and allowed to settle before barreling. The blend was assembled immediately after harvest, and the wine was aged on light lees in 56% new French and Hungarian barrels.
Tasting Notes: a true crowd-pleaser, offering an enticing bouquet of blueberry, marionberry, lingonberry, blackberry, and a hint of black licorice. On the palate, it unfolds rich layers of blueberry pie, vanilla, and butterscotch, complemented by vibrant notes of rhubarb, pomegranate, and a touch of toasted oak.
