2022 Hanna Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml
97 POINTS & DOUBLE GOLD MEDAL - North Coast Wine Challenge 2025
Vineyard: Hanna’s 2022 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was grown on our Red Ranch in Alexander Valley. Below Hoot Owl Creek this benchland ranch is planted on Clough Series gravelly loam soil. Above Hoot Owl it planted on Laughlin Series Sandy Loam. These are soils of two-foot depth or less. The vineyard is planted to 50 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 acres of Malbec, and just over a half- acre of Saint Macaire. The Cabernet is planted to clones 7, 2 and 6. The Malbec is clone 9, and the Saint Macaire is a field selection. Vine age in our 2021 vintage ranges from 11 to 31 years.
Vintage 2022: October 2021 brought an atmospheric river event that recharged the soil profile. This led to an even bud break – later than 2021 - strong early growth and a moderate crop. A Goldilocks summer, until September that is, resulted in even ripening and an early start to harvest. The slope steepened dramatically over Labor Day, with days of high heat pushing sugar accumulation. Our canopy management technique, which retains the protective leaves on the vines, proved to be the perfect antidote to the dehydrating heat that damaged fruit in conventionally farmed vineyards. We harvested the Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec grapes between September 18 and October 1, the Nero d’Avola on September 5, and the St Macaire on October 2, 2022, at an average 25.4 o Brix.
Winemaking: We hand-picked, primarily in the cool hours between midnight and sunrise. The grapes were sorted, destemmed, and partially crushed to stainless steel fermentation tanks. The individual lots ranged from seven to 10 days of skin contact, having on average a four-to-five-day cold soak before being warmed and inoculated. Draining and pressing was done “to taste,” based on daily tastings of the wines during and after pumpovers. The individual lots were aged in oak barrels on lees. The sub-blends were initially assembled in February 2023, before being fine-tuned, filtered and bottled in June 2024.
Tasting Notes: Stunningly clad in deep scarlet, our 2022 AV Cab sotto voce is not. It trumpets forte notes of raspberry laden Linzer torte , accompanied by aromas of cherry wood, marzipan, ginger, clove, pipe tobacco and warm plum pudding. It is sapidly delicious by mouth, with juniper, Bing cherry and espresso wrapped in a flavor/texture of dried ripe figs. Our Cab’s coda is succulent and long, leaving one happy that it’s only the first glass. (Tasted 2-26-25)
