2021 HANNA Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley, 91 Points, International Wine Report

2021 HANNA Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley, 90 POINTS, Wine Enthusiast - This Cabernet that is blended with about 20% Malbec displays a complex nose, with aromas of cassis, cranberry, plum and sage. The palate is a juicier affair, with mouthwatering acidity in balance with richer structure. The finely textured tannin here will pair marvelously with well-marbled cuts of grilled steak.

Vineyard: Hanna’s 2021 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was grown on our Red Ranch in Alexander Valley. Below Hoot Owl Creek this benchland ranch is planted on Clough Series gravelly loam soil. Above Hoot Owl it planted on Laughlin Series Sandy Loam. These are soils of two-foot depth or less. The vineyard is planted to 50 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 acres of Malbec, and just over a half- acre of Saint Macaire. The Cabernet is planted to clones 7, 2 and 6. The Malbec is clone 9, and the Saint Macaire is a field selection. Vine age in our 2021 vintage ranges from 11 to 31 years.

Vintage 2021:  Winter 2021 was extremely dry and warm, resulting in an extended bud break and bloom. Crop levels were low in 2021 from a combination of weak spring growth, small clusters, and blustery days. Summer was consistently warm and verasion was early. We had a moderate heat events through mid September but nothing dramatic. We harvested the grapes for our Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon between September 24th and October 19th finishing just before a massive bomb cyclone (streaming water from three sub-tropical cyclones) dumped over 19 inches of rain on the vineyard.

Winemaking: We began by hand picking, primarily in the cool hours from midnight to sunrise. The grapes were sorted, destemmed, and partially crushed to stainless steel fermentation tanks. Draining and pressing was done “to taste,” based on daily tastings of the wines during and after pumpovers. The individual lots were aged in oak barrels on lees. The blend was initially assembled in January 2022, fine-tuned in February and April 2023, before being filtered and bottled in May 2023.

Tasting Notes:  A smile inducing fusillade of aromas shoot from this purple hued youngster. Forte notes of  elderflower, black berry, and black cherry. Licorice and sandalwood are followed by a cataract of similar flavors, enhanced with baking spice, cocoa dusted almonds and fresh blueberries. All this is wrapped in succulence, and fine, smooth tannin. (Tasted 5-8-24)
