Our Sauvignon Blanc is made entirely from our 50 acre Slusser Road Vineyard. Thirty-six acres are planted to Sauvignon Blanc, comprising 28 acres of clone 1, six acres of clone 317 and two acres of Sauvignon Blanc selection Musqué. The remaining 14 acres are planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Soils are primarily Yolo and Cortina gravelly loam. These soils are relatively deep and little or no irrigation is required. The soil’s fertility allows us to keep the vineyard in permanent cover crop. The vines are planted 8’ by 12’ and trained vertically on a divided canopy. We are experimenting with cane pruning but most of the vineyard is spur pruned. Suckering, leafing, hedging and shoot removal precede crop thinning.
Spring of 2006 was sodden, and bloom was late but very successful. July began cool but became blistering, exceeding 100o F for several days. August was cool, allowing varietal character to develop and giving us time to drop much of the very abundant crop. As usual, we dropped excess fruit as well as sunburn and waterberry. Flavors began to intensify as September progressed, and we began harvesting on September 25th in our clone 317 block. Picking through the vineyard as flavors peaked, we finished on October 15th; managing to get all the Sauvignon Blanc in the winery before the scourge of Botrytis ran unchecked in much of the Russian River Valley. We picked in a Brix range of 22.4o to 23.5o with an average of just over 23o.
The wine emphasizes fruit in the aromas and mid palate with a finish broadened by malolactic fermentation. It’s fresh and quaffable with distinctive lime, grass and a murmur of basil.
