Hanna's Bismark Mountain Vineyard located in the Mayacamas Mountains is the source for this Syrah. Two blocks are planted to Syrah. Block 22 sits at the vineyard's highest point, while block 12 is in a more protected ravine just below. Together they make 4.2 acres. Both blocks were planted in 1993 to clone 1 grafted to 110R on a vertical trellis with 9 by 4 spacing In 2002, we planted a third block to Syrah clone 174. Bismark's high elevation gives us growing conditions that have features of both warm and cool climates; intense sun yet low air temperatures. The quality of the grapes reflects this rare terroir.

Growing season 2001 began warm and became hot. Bismark was much cooler than the valley floor but harvest was still very early. We picked the majority of the fruit at 26.7 brix on August 31 and the balance on September 14 at 27.7 brix. The Syrah yield was 2.94 tons per acre.

With a gorgeous nose of black cherries, lavender and pepper, this mouth filling Syrah is full of concentrated flavor and substantial tannins.
